"Lyra” River touched my shoulders, his hands skimming down my arms. I remained motionless, attempting to swallow the emotion threatening to overcome me. His hands slid to my hips and spun me around. I refused to meet his eyes, glaring at his chest. His soft tawny hand came up and tilted my chin so I had no choice, but to look into his deep brown eyes and their captivating green flecks. A different kind of heat battled with the jealousy as I looked at him and breathed in his musky scent.

"Lyra," he said my name again, like a prayer. And then his lips were on mine, the sudden pleasure and heat of it caused power to explode out of me in a massive gust of wind. I didn't think, I only moved, pressing myself against him, wrapping my arms around his neck, and clinging to the kiss for as long as he would let me. His fingers tightened, digging into my skin as I let out a soft moan.

He broke the kiss, both of us panting. Electric power zinged up and down my skin as if someone had connected a live wire to it and my lips tingled from the force of the kiss.

"Lyra, I can't," his voice was a husky whisper. I felt like he had slapped me. I took a step out of his arms, retreating inside myself to avoid the pain. Instantly ice replaced the warm zapping electric feeling. He reached for me, and moved further away, retreating from his heat. The pain and heartache in his eyes almost broke me, but I steadied myself and hardened my heart against the compassion welling inside.

"We should head back; that was just one step." I made my tone even, a bit of the frozen chill inside of me leaking out.

"Please, Lyra, I can..."

"Now, River," I said, demanding. He gave me one last desperate look, and that nub in the back of my mind flared with sadness as I watched him.
